  • Valves, Solid State or Digital Modelling?

So, what do we all think? Do we like the warm sound of hot tubes, the crisp sparkle of solid state or the multiverse of options that come with digital modelling amps?

Me, I’m a valve man. I have a little Blackstar ID:Core for practice, but my live sound comes from working valves hard

It’s really tough for me to fall solidly on one side of this discussion. There are pros and cons to both and depending on a situation, I could use either.

For instance, for gigging, amp modeling is the way to go, IMHO. I have a fractal AX8 with an Atomic FRFR speaker. I can get pretty much any sound I need, travel lightly to a gig, set up and break down quickly without breaking my back!

For recoding however, I like to use some amp modeling, but definitely add some tube amps into the mix to get a more “responsive” feel to the recording. If budget is an issue then amp modeling is the way to go as you have a lot of variety for relatively little money.

On a side note – for recording amps at home I use a Palmer ADIG-LB it’s basically an all-analog cabinet modeler – and sounds amazing for recording amps (see attached).

Tough call as there is value to each. I have tried the ToneX (very good) and Fractal (excellent) and tube amps. I do like the Fractal through a tube amp/cab. A hybrid approach where you don’t have to pay up for a vintage Fuzz Face/Klon…
