So I’m just curious, does anyone have any tone chasing stories? For example trying to recreate that early Led Zeppelin or Blue öyster Cult tone.

I’d like to know what methods you went with, how you searched, did you find it?

Was it a specific gear piece or a technique that changed the tone completely?

Why did you go the route you went?

    Did you have fun?

Take me on the journey you embarked on in your tone chasing adventure!

    This is a great question!

I’ve been down so many roads chasing different tones. They always fell a bit short in my opinion because of the cost of chasing tones. I tried to get a Clapton tone, EVH tone, SRV tone and I was never satisfied (or I couldn’t afford what I thought was a key piece of the tone). I’ve since switched to an amp modeler that helps achieve a lot of different tones, but still have a hard time sounding like the tone I’m going for. In the end – I think a lot of it has to do with your playing. EVH (RIP) would sound like EVH if he played my rig. I just don’t sound like EVH – even if I was to play his rig. I think it’s in the hands. But that’s just my opinion!

Great subject though – thanks for sharing!

Tone chasing seems malleable. I think the Supreme Court said it best when they tried to define pornography: “I don’t know what it is, but I’ll know it when I see it.”

Tone seems to be pretty much like that. I can’t quite describe it, but I’ll know it when I hear it. 😎
